Choosing to hate another person is the same as choosing to hate yourself.
Every face we meet is a mirror angled slightly differently at the same light. When we direct contempt outward, the beam still leaves from inside us, still passes through us first, still warms the room we are standing in. The other is not a separate organism receiving our verdict — they are another cell of the same body, another droplet refracting the same galaxy. So the chemistry of hatred metabolizes in our own tissue long before it reaches its target, and often it never reaches anything else at all. What we refuse to forgive out there, we are quietly rehearsing in here. What might soften if we noticed the resemblance?
