When we identify with a trauma label, we reinforce that trauma.

When we identify with a trauma label, we reinforce that trauma.

Identity is the quietest kind of self-fulfilling prophecy, and the language of trauma can become a cage the moment we mistake the label for the self. A wound describes something that happened to us; it was never meant to describe what we are. When we wear the name long enough, we start tending it, feeding it, building a life shaped to fit its edges. The cell does not become the scar — it simply carries the mark while the organism keeps renewing around it. We are always more than the worst thing the map can name. What would loosen if we held the label in an open hand instead of stitching it to our skin?
