True self-awareness resides only in the present.

Presence is where consciousness actually happens — not in the story of who we were, not in the projection of who we'll be. We carry a self stitched together from memory and forecast, but neither the remembered self nor the anticipated one is ever here; they are labels we mistake for the living thing. The present is the only place awareness is not a description of experience but the experience itself. Everything past has dissolved into blur, everything future has not yet condensed, and the whole cosmos we are only touches us at this single sharp point. What would remain of the self if we set down the story and simply stood in this instant?
